For years, muscle was associated primarily with athletes, bodybuilders, and physical appearance. Today, science tells a very different story. Researchers now recognize skeletal muscle as one of the body’s most metabolically active tissues. Beyond generating movement and strength, it plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar, supporting bone health, protecting the joints, producing signaling molecules known as myokines, and maintaining independence as we age. In other words, muscle is no longer viewed as a cosmetic asset; it is increasingly regarded as a cornerstone of longevity. The good news? Building and preserving muscle is possible at almost any age.

Why Muscle Matters

Beginning in our thirties, adults naturally start losing muscle mass and strength. This gradual decline accelerates with age, particularly after the age of 60, unless steps are taken to counteract it. Loss of muscle affects far more than physical appearance. Reduced muscle mass has been associated with decreased mobility, poorer balance, increased risk of falls and fractures, slower recovery after illness or surgery, reduced insulin sensitivity, and greater vulnerability to chronic disease. Conversely, individuals who maintain healthy muscle mass throughout life tend to remain stronger, more active, and more independent as they grow older.

Muscle Is Metabolically Active

Muscle helps regulate the way the body uses energy. It improves glucose uptake from the bloodstream, supports insulin sensitivity, and contributes to a healthier metabolism. During physical activity, muscles also release myokines; specialized signaling proteins that influence inflammation, immune function, brain health, and communication between organs. How to Build Muscle

Contrary to popular belief, building muscle does not require spending hours in the gym or lifting extremely heavy weights. Consistency matters far more than intensity. The most effective approach combines progressive resistance training with adequate recovery and proper nutrition. Strength training two to four times per week is sufficient for most healthy adults. Exercises may include free weights, resistance machines, resistance bands, or bodyweight movements such as squats, lunges, push-ups, and rows. The key principle is progressive overload; gradually increasing the challenge over time by adding weight, repetitions, or resistance as strength improves. Muscles adapt only when they are given a reason to become stronger.

Protein: The Building Block

Exercise stimulates muscle growth, but nutrition provides the materials needed to make it happen. Protein supplies the amino acids required to repair and build muscle tissue after training.

Rather than consuming most daily protein in a single meal, experts increasingly recommend distributing protein intake throughout the day, including at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and, when appropriate, snacks. Good protein sources include fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, legumes, soy foods, and lean meats. Older adults often require higher protein intake than younger individuals to maintain muscle effectively.

Recovery Builds Muscle

Muscle does not grow during exercise.It grows during recovery. Adequate sleep allows the body to repair muscle fibers and regulate hormones involved in tissue growth and recovery. Rest days between intense training sessions also help prevent overuse injuries while allowing muscles to adapt. Ignoring recovery often slows progress rather than accelerating it.

One of the most encouraging findings in longevity research is that it is never too late to begin. Studies consistently demonstrate that adults in their sixties, seventies, and even eighties can increase muscle strength and improve physical function through appropriately supervised resistance training. The body remains remarkably adaptable throughout life. While older adults may build muscle more slowly than younger individuals, the health benefits are equally meaningful.
